Wiki — Death Penalty & EXP Loss
The Death Penalty in Lineage II can be confusing when a character dies shortly after reaching a new level. The percentage shown on the EXP bar is not the value used to calculate the EXP loss.
The penalty is calculated using the total EXP corresponding to your current level, rather than simply removing the same percentage from the visible EXP bar.
How does the Death Penalty work?
When you die, the Death Penalty takes a percentage of the EXP amount associated with your current level.
This means that the penalty is not calculated from the EXP of the previous level, and it is also not simply a percentage of the EXP currently displayed on your bar.
Example: Level 75 at 0.00%
Consider a character who has just reached:
Level 75 — 0.00% EXP
If this character dies and the Death Penalty is 4%, the penalty is calculated from the EXP corresponding to level 75, not from the EXP required for level 74.
Therefore, the character can lose enough EXP to fall back to level 74.
For example, the character may end up at:
Level 74 — 76.00% EXP
At first glance, this can look like the server removed a very large percentage of the EXP bar. However, this is only the visual result of applying the level 75 EXP penalty and then displaying the remaining EXP on the level 74 bar.
Why does the EXP bar appear to lose so much?
The important point is that the percentage of the Death Penalty and the percentage displayed on the EXP bar are two different things.
- Death Penalty: calculated from the EXP corresponding to your current level.
- EXP Bar: displays your current progress toward the next level.
- If the penalty causes you to lose a level, the remaining EXP is displayed on the previous level's EXP bar.
Because the EXP requirements between levels are not identical, especially around the higher levels, the resulting percentage displayed on the previous level can look significantly larger than the actual Death Penalty percentage.
Level 74 → 75 and higher levels
The EXP progression around these levels is important to understand. The jump from level 74 to level 75 requires a significant amount of EXP, while the progression through the following levels becomes more consistent.
This is why dying at the beginning of level 75 can have a very noticeable visual effect on the EXP bar if the penalty causes the character to return to level 74.
Important
If you are level 75 at 0.00% and die, you should not expect to simply lose 4% of the visible level 75 EXP bar.
The penalty is based on the EXP value corresponding to level 75. If this amount is greater than the EXP you currently have in level 75, your character can lose the level and return to level 74.
This is not a bug. The large percentage that may appear on the level 74 EXP bar is the result of converting the remaining EXP into the percentage of the previous level.
Quick reference
- The Death Penalty is not based on the visible EXP percentage.
- The calculation uses the EXP corresponding to your current level.
- Dying at 0.00% can cause you to lose a level.
- The percentage shown after losing a level can look much larger than the actual penalty.
- This behavior is intentional and is not an EXP display bug.
